About Me

Swanson Speech Therapy Ballard Seattle | home

Welcome to Swanson Speech Therapy! I am Natalie Swanson, M.S., CCC-SLP, a licensed speech and language pathologist based in Ballard, Seattle. I'm a member of the Washington State Speech and Hearing Association and am nationally credentialed through the American Speech and Hearing Association. In addition to holding memberships to national and state wide speech, language and hearing associations, I am PROMPT trained and a Hanen certified speech and language professional. Please click on the links above for more information regarding each certification/training.

In 2008, I received my B.S. in communication disorders and in 2010 received my master's degree in speech and language pathology from the University of Redlands. I currently work at Boyer Children's Clinic in Seattle. My previous clinical work as a speech and language pathologist includes Kindering and Federal Way Public Schools. I take pride in ensuring that family members are an integral part of each child’s speech and language team, and I encourage parent involvement and feedback during the therapeutic process. I have found the most success providing speech and language therapy to children when it is encouraged to foster this type of environment and family involvement. Since starting my own practice, I strive everyday to create a holistic therapeutic approach that is inclusive of each person important in each child’s life that I treat.

I have a wide range of expertise and experience in the following areas and disorders:

  • Autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)
  • Receptive and expressive language delays and disorders
  • Articulation/phonological delays and disorders
  • Fluency/stuttering
  • Pragmatic language disorders
  • Genetic syndromes and disorders (Down Syndrome, Prader Willi Syndrome, William’s Syndrome, etc.)
  • General delays otherwise not specified

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Chris, and dog, Obi. I love to run, practice yoga, and curl up with a good book. When I have the opportunity, I love to travel and visit family in California for relaxation and time in the sun.

Here are some things families have said about their experience working with me!

"My biggest concern was how my daughter would connect with the therapist. She is very shy and can take a long time to warm up to people. Luckily, she loved Natalie and had no reservations with her!"

"I would recommend Natalie to anyone without reservation! My daughter was always so excited to see her arrive, and she was always so friendly and helpful when I needed to ask questions (and often vent). We both loved working with her"

"I feared that my son would never speak. He was very delayed with no words at age 2. Evan loved you and looked forward to playing with you each week. It was great to learn how to encourage him to speak. Seeing the quick progress was fantastic and reassuring."

Fees for Therapy, Consultations, and Evaluations:

Billing Procedures

Swanson Speech Therapy uses a HIPAA compliant Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system for billing and charging for sessions on the date of service. If you are a Premera subscriber, Swanson Speech Therapy will bill to Premera as an in network provider, and you will be billed for your responsible portion once insurance payment is received by Premera. For all other insurance providers, Swanson Speech Therapy is considered an out of network provider, and you will be billed the full amount of the session each week. A super bill will be provided to you if you would like to self submit for insurance reimbursement at the end of each month.

Cancellations and "no-shows":

Please cancel or reschedule appointments as far ahead as possible. This gives me time to offer appointment slots to other children. You can email or call as early as 7:00 am during the week. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be billed at the normal rate, except for unique/emergency circumstances. Appointments missed without a cancellation ("no-shows"), will also be charged at the normal rate. "No-shows" will be noted as such on the monthly bill. Insurance companies do not reimburse for missed appointments.

Where does my child's speech therapy take place?

Swanson Speech Therapy home office is located in the Seattle's Ballard neighborhood but I am happy to provide speech and language therapy in a variety of North Seattle area settings including:

  • Home visits are beneficial because speech therapy is taking place in your child’s natural environment. I will sometimes bring my own materials but also love to integrate the toys and routines you have at your home. Using your toys and routines during therapy sessions helps to ensure that therapy outcomes are targeting what’s most important and functional for you and your child. *I charge a travel fee of $1/minute traveled to and from your home for home visits.

  • If your child spends the majority of his or her day at child care I am happy to provide therapy in this environment as well. Child care visits give me an opportunity to provide ideas and strategies for your child’s child care providers to help your child be most successful. *I charge a travel fee of $1/minute traveled to and from child care visits.

  • Located in Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, my home office is a great way for me to provide speech and language therapy to families that I may not be able to drive to during the day. It also presents opportunities for generalization of skills in a different environment than your home and gives occasion for new experiences to foster speech and language development. It is also a good option for older children working on articulation or if speech and language therapy at your home is too distracting for your child.

  • Sometimes children may have difficulties regarding specific routines and experiences in the community. What better way to target these skills than in real time in these places? Examples of goals targeted in community settings include: joining in play with peers, successfully transitioning from the home to the park or from the park back home, responding to peers during play, increasing your child’s ability to explore different environments, talking about a past experience, etc. *I charge a travel fee of $1/minute traveled to and from community setting visits.

  • How often can my child have speech therapy?

I am able to offer 45 minute therapy sessions when I travel to your home, a child care, or a community setting. These sessions include direct therapy with your child, parent coaching, and time for debriefing/note writing/clean up at the end of the session. I am also able to offer 45 minute sessions at my home office in Ballard, Seattle. The frequency of sessions is dependent on your child's needs and is determined case by case. However, I typically provide sessions 1-3 times per week for each child I treat. **Due to COVID-19, I am now offering virtual speech therapy sessions as well as beginning to offer in person visits at my office starting July 6th, 2020.

    Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I accept Premera and am considered an in network provider for Premera. For all other insurance companies, I am considered an out of network provider and families pay me directly. Many families that I work with are able to bill insurance themselves with the invoice that I provide.

What is expected of me as a parent?

I ask that you play an active role in your child's speech and language therapy, although that may look differently for different clients. Ways that parents have engaged in their child's therapy in the past include: getting on the floor and playing with me and the child, actively observing and trying strategies used in the session at home, helping their child to play speech "games" at home that have been discussed and played during therapy. If it works out best for your family to have therapy provided at a daycare setting, we will put a plan in place to have open communication about strategies used during each session.
